Best Las Vegas Golf Courses

by Charles Davis

Las Vegas has a lot of entertainment to offer including gambling, Broadway shows, and golf. If you are considering golfing while in Las Vegas it might be beneficial to have an idea as to what the best golf courses are. So, all though there are a lot of very good courses, some stand out among the others.

If you are looking for a challenging course to test your golf skills, while also enjoying a scenic view, consider the Badlands Golf Club Desperado/Diablo. While your skills will definitely be tested on one of the three nine hole courses, designed by Johnny Miller, you will also view the beautiful Red rock canyons, arroyos, and natural washes. Rates start at $180 and there are nearby places to stay.

If you are looking for a Las Vegas Golf Vacation Package, you can purchase one from one of several Las Vegas Golf websites. From September 1 of 2008 until the end of the year you will be able to purchase one of several packages from $479 to $799. The packages include from two to four days of golf, at some of the best courses, and some of them include two nights in a hotel as well.

Vacationing in Las Vegas will provide you with some of the best golf courses so why not play on one designed by Arnold Palmer who is one of the best golfers. The golf course is called Arroyo Club at Red Rocks and the prices start at $189. This course is known for its customer service and well kept greens. The atmosphere will replicate a private club but in reality this course is open to the public.

One of the less expensive courses in Las Vegas is the Black Mountain Golf and Country Club which averages about one hundred twenty dollars. This is still a great golf course because it was recently renovated and lies in the middle of the Mojave Desert which provides great atmosphere and scenery.

When considering, what are the best Las Vegas golf courses to play during your golf vacation, consider the Falls Golf Club at Las Vegas Resort, designed by Tom Weiskopf. The course is the newest at the resort. The mountain terrain and the desert floor both is a challenge, and the beautiful scenery is impressive, which includes views of Lake Las Vegas, the mountains, and the strip.

While you are vacationing in Las Vegas and looking for a great golf course then the Bali Hai is another great choice. It is the only championship course on the Las Vegas Strip. This course would be perfect for a golfer looking to work on their skills because it can be challenging. The course runs over seven acres of multiple water features, palm trees, flowers, plants, and greens. When you play here you will be able to see a different side of Las Vegas.

Another course designed by a golfing legend is the Reflection Bay Golf Club at Las Vegas Resort, designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course is the home of the Wendyas Three-Tour Challenge, which benefits the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. The course has challenging bunkers, perfect greens, and three waterfalls.

Organize A Spirited Golf Trip For The Family

Typically, golf vacations are for seasoned golfers who want to try their hand at new and challenging golf courses around the world. However, as the golf sector grows, the market is growing as well to include vacations geared toward golf training and family golf vacations.

To learn about fun ways to plan a great family golf vacation, keep reading.

1. Choose a golf resort that’s family friendly.

If you’re planning to bring your family along on your next golf vacation, choose a resort that seems family friendly. Look for alternate activities like tennis, swimming, spas and recreation areas so that family members who don’t feel like golfing have other optional activities to do while you’re all out on the green. Or for those who do enjoy the sport, you can look around to purchase appealing golf-related gifts.

2. Investigate training and school possibilities.

A lot of new golf resorts are starting to offer golf boot camps geared toward all levels and ages of players. If your little ones are just learning the sport or you’re trying to improve your skill, this can be a great option. Some resorts offer junior training camps and a separate course for the adults to enjoy while their kids are at golf school.

Another fun and cost-effective idea for families is to hire one professional instructor to work with the entire family over the course of a day or a week. Your instructor can evaluate your skill levels, work with you through a game, and you can spend your vacation learning the game together.

3. Try renting junior gear for the kids.

If your children are still growing, you might want to look into renting, borrowing, or buying used gear. Junior clubs come in a variety of sizes. Before you shell out the money for a brand new set that will be too small by next year, you may want to look into less expensive options.

4. Pack lots of sunscreen and water.

Kids are durable, but before you set off on a long day of walking the course with them, make sure you’ve packed lots of extra sunscreen, bottled water and a hat. Heat stroke and burns happen often on the golf course, so be prepared.

5. Leave early for your tee times.

Parents know that kids can take forever to get ready, so if you’re typically at the course 30 minutes ahead of your tee time, aim to be there an hour in advance if you’ve got the kids in tow.

6. Spread the wisdom.

Use this opportunity to impart on your children the importance of good golf etiquette and strong sportsmanship.

Swimming - Everyone Enjoys A Cool Dip In A Refreashing Pools

by Adam Beaty

Swimming is one of favorite summer recreational pastimes across the country, and in some geographic locations, swimming can be enjoyed all year around if the local weather permits. For persons considering taking the plunge into becoming a full-fledged swimmer, with all of the appropriate equipment and techniques, this article can offer some helpful suggestions.

When enjoying swimming as a recreational, fitness, or competitive activity, individuals and their peers will likely implement a number of swimming pool supplies, strategies, and safety tactics that will allow for the maximal possible amount of fun. Almost everyone has enjoyed swimming at one point in their lives, however, the fun of this activity can be greatly enhanced with all the proper tools and planning this article reiterates for you.

The first integral aspect of enjoying a swimming outing is determining where you will be doing your swimming. Choices for these endeavors can include lakes, rivers, ponds, oceans, seas, local pools, private pools, or water parks. Keep in mind that natural bodies of water oftentimes do not have safety measures in place to ensure your safety, so swim with great deal of caution at these venues. Additionally, natural bodies of water are subject to unknown water conditions, currents, and tides at given moments notice, which has caused innumerable deaths over the years. Having fun while swimming must involve being safe in all your actions.

Outdoor swimming locations can include all of those mentioned as indoor swimming facilities; however, these locations are simply outdoors and permit other activities such as sun bathing. Other outdoor swimming options also include natural forming bodies of water such as lakes, oceans, rivers, creeks, and seas. These venues, though exciting, present a number of dangers to swimmers that are not necessarily associated with man-made swimming environments. Issues such as currents, unknown depths, tides, and other naturally forming obstacles can ruin an otherwise safe swimming adventure if proper precautions are not taken by swimmers.

First, having the proper bathing suit is necessary at all public swimming facilities and generally recommended for private pool usage as well. For men, a number of suit styles exist including swimming trunks, swimming briefs, swimming board shorts, and competitive swimming suits as well. For women, the options expand even further to include bikinis, two piece suits, one piece suits, and host of other strap styles and cuts to fit any lady?s personal fancy and physical needs. For suits that will not fade over time in color or material density, polyester style suits are the best choice, because Lycra and nylon suit materials will stretch, fade, and discolor rather quickly during periods of serious swimming.

Water equipment for swimming includes a host of items to facilitate the swimmer?s comfort during a pool event. These items can include goggles, masks, ear plugs, swimming caps, floats, life jackets, rafts, and essentially any other device that will help swimmers truly enjoy their water experience. Also, people can use toys in the pool including diving rings, inflatable toys, underwater torpedoes, snorkels, squirting toys, balls, Frisbees, and a number flotation devices such as foam noodles.

Pool deck equipment is also a vital consideration for any person deciding to make a day of their swimming. These will typically include pool deck chairs, umbrellas, coolers for drinks, picnic baskets for snacks, towels, sunglasses, and other sunbathing gear as well.

Alongside all the fun items people will bring to the pool, a consideration of all the safety equipment they should bring along as well must be made. Items like lifejackets, water wings, and other flotation devices could potentially save the lives of weak or distressed swimmers. Additionally, parents should always keep an eye out for the location of the children, and older swimmers should use the buddy system in case one swimmer runs into trouble at some point.

Swimming lessons

by Dane Masters

I decided that this past summer, I was going to enroll my daughter in swimming lessons. She was three years old at the time and perfectly capable of learning what needs to be learned. With that decision having been made, I began my quest of finding swimming lessons that would suit her age. I quickly discovered that all of our local community centers and pools cater more to stay at home mothers. Unfortunately, I work full-time during the week. My daytime working hours do not allow for her to take swimming lessons around lunchtime several days a week. I was actually pretty surprised that more classes were not on Saturdays or in the evenings. I wasn’t sure if I should be offended by that discovery or not.

Someone had told me that I should look into private swimming lessons for her. I did that as well, discovering that while they would cater to my schedule, it was not a wise investment for my wallet. I would be paying double the costs of group swimming lessons. I’m quite sure that the private swimming lessons would have been more valuable and productive for her, but it was not in my budget. I continued my search.

Being a mother, I thought that asking other mothers living in the vicinity of my home would be a great idea. That experience really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. It seemed that I was the single working mother around the block, so the others looked at me somehow in disdain when I tried to share my problems with them. Finally, I reached to another, more productive conclusion. I took the phone and made a call to the local community center. I was surprised to find somebody willing to talk to me and solve my problem in a satisfactory manner. I was not the only one in that situation! So the people there decided to give swimming lessons during Saturdays so working people, like me, would be able to bring their children, with no hassles at all.

In the weeks leading up to the start of her swimming lessons, my husband and I spent quite a bit of time talking about it with her. She was beginning to get excited and so was I. We couldn’t wait to see her splashing around in the water with confidence. And that’s exactly what I was looking for her to gain - confidence. I wanted her to be familiar with water just in case she should ever fall into a pool. We have several relatives who have pools and it has always been something I have been uncomfortable with.

So I took them shopping and bought them some new bathing suits. They were very happy, and so was I. Then came the first real swimming lessons, and they were so glad to be able to learn how to swim, that I realized that all my efforts were worth it, no doubt about it. They looked at me from time to time, while listening to the couch, but only minutes passed and they forgot all about me, being more interested in learning. I can tell that they become more confident since I took them to the Saturday swimming lessons. Now I am not so afraid that they will have an accident when they bathe in a pool.

Weight Loss And Teenagers, How to do it Right

by Ricardo d Argence

The subject of youth and dieting is very controversial. Obesity in children and teens is now at its peak in the Western world, and it is now that reality discerns the eating disorders and their unrealistic ideals cannot be ignored. Some teens really do need to lose weight but many do not. Since most children should avoid a strict weight-loss plan, reducing weight gain is possible through meal planning with common sense and getting consistent physical activity.

Excess calories not used by energy requirements in children will be converted to fat and then stored. However, if a child consumes fewer calories than their minimum energy threshold, then their body fat is converted into energy to make up for the calorie deficit.

What can you do to improve a physique that may not be perfect? Almost everyone would like to change their weight or body fat percentage a little bit, how is this done? Can you really change the shape of your body?

It’s always possible to change your body, but it all depends on a myriad of things. Keep in mind that some are controllable and some are not.

Puberty. You might doubt it but during puberty your weight and shape of your body will be influenced by it. It is normal for boys and girls to gain both height and weight during puberty. The internal chemistry of the body allows men to increase muscle while girls add fat. With these changes you may feel overweight even when you’re not but have no fear because this is completely normal.

Genes. Especially if you are the only one in your group who is not svelte, it can be very difficult. Your apperance has everything to do with your gene factors. A child with overweight parents has a high risk of being overweight themselves.

What you eat. While puberty and genetics are things you can’t control, what you eat is another story. Eating french fries, fast food, sodas, chips, and sweets on a regular basis and avoiding fruits and vegetables like the plague can add excess calories without much nutrition.

Before you decide to go on a diet or weight loss program, take some time to figure out if you’re really overweight or if you have a distorted body image. You should also talk to your parents and your doctor about any weight issues you may have and about whether losing weight is something you should be concerned about.

Tips For Family Travel

by Trip Wend

It is needless to say that you like to travel alone when you are young and independent. You enjoyed the feeling of freedom, of seeing new places and meeting new people and speaking with them during traditional summer holiday in Florida.

Instead of single person traveling, if traveled with family the things will be different. Family travel is a new level of challenge compared to traveling on your own or as a couple. Here are some tips on how you can enjoy traveling as a family.

One of the first difficulty in family travel is the cost. As you know children do not fly for free after the first couple of years, and airline tickets are not cheap. Discount airfares is the answer to this problem. If you try then you can find amazing deals on airline tickets, making air travel affordable.

The advantage of the car is its relative cheapness. It doesn’t cost much more to drive a car with five people in it, than one that you are alone in. At least in terms of money, that is. When it comes to your sanity, a long drive in a full car can be very costly indeed.

There are a few steps you can take to handle your children at the back seat. First make regular stops. It is usually not worth getting back fast, that may lead to impatient, but the worm like passengers will like to stop at every five minutes.

When stopping, there should be place to go around for the children. Sparing some of the physical energy makes it helpful to sit still in the car later. Also try to run around yourself. Exercise has a stress reducing effect. You can use it.

You should make arrangement for food and water for everyone in the car at reasonable intervals. It will be helpful for the hungry or thirsty passenger. The food that can be eaten with less messiness like snacks can be carried over.

Remember that family travel contains its own good points. You can share experiences with your family members. Make your own kids to enjoy instead of always pushing them to enjoy yours. Definitely you can have a great family travel experience.

Wakeboarding: The New Family Vacation

by Lane ”Dawg” Bowers

Family vacations are always great family bonding experiences. You will always come out of them with more than you expected. For example, one thing that families may not think to do is to learn to wake board together. This is a fun and exhilarating experience and you can find great lessons online.

Wakeboarding fits in perfectly to any camping trip or vacation at the beach. Often times there are places just for activates such as this. This activity is great because of the ease of learning how to do it. People are learning to get up on their wakeboard in as little as thirty minutes.

Safety is number one. You should be very cautious in trying this sport without having the proper training. You can hurt yourself if you have not been instructed on the proper techniques involved with wakeboarding. It is important to train on land before attempting the sport on the water. Training videos can be found online for free. Type in alearn to wakeboard in one houra into Google to find one.

One of the most important things that you and your family will need to learn is the correct position to be in when holding a tow rope. You must have the proper stance in order to avoid injury. A good online training video will show you how to position your shoulders, the ameat hooka and the importance of keeping your knees loose.

This method of learning on land before going in the water applies to most other water sports as well. Whether you are wake boarding or water skiing, you need to learn the basics on land first. Then you can move on to the water, but not by being pulled behind the boat.

No matter where you decide to take your fun water adventures, you will usually need a water ski boat for the activity. A barefoot boom or waterski boom is recommended for the beginners getting onto the water for the first time. This will allow the new wake boarder to refine his or her skills without taking a fall.

After you have practiced with a barefoot boom and feel comfortable relying on it for support, you can attempt to use the tow rope. Just remember that it is imperative for safety that you use the same techniques with the rope that you used with the water ski boom.

Do not hesitate to try something different for the upcoming family vacation and learn to wake board. If you choose wake boarding as a family activity, make sure you know what the proper techniques. Easy and Effective Landscaping

After you have read through this article, you should have a better understanding of how to achieve a great looking landscape at the lowest possible rate. If you need further clarification, it would be wise to hunt around in the landscape books section of your local bookstore or library.

Steps in landscaping

The most important thing to remember with landscaping is harmony. This harmony applies to the actual process of creating the landscape as well - if you don’t follow the steps properly, you will end up stressed and the design will not be what you wanted. Refer to the following table for the correct sequence of events in planning and constructing your landscape.

Table1: Landscaping Sequence

Step 1 - Installation of irrigation and drainage. Step 2 - Construction of patios, walls, fences, paths and other permanent fixtures. Step 3 - Planting the desired trees, shrubs and other plants. Step 4 - Creating a lawn.

Devising a landscaping plan

It is vital to any successful landscape that it has a good plan or design sheet. This plan can significantly reduce your workload, obtaining the best results for your efforts. The plan should commence with a careful measurement of the plot, after which a scaled plan is created.

Plotting a scale graph

The first step in this process is measuring out your yard, or plot. If you are unsure as to how to do this, it may be possible to get a deed map of your property from your builder or county office. These maps are drawn to scale and they can be converted easily if necessary. If you cannot obtain one, you will have to create your own using a scale and graph paper. In this case, you will have to measure the perimeter of your property, noting boundaries and distances from the house to these boundaries. Remember to include significant elements such as driveways and fences. Using a scale, note these on the graph paper and draw your plan using the scale. A scale of 1 inch = 10 feet is a good measure. Be sure to note any existing trees or shrubs that you wish to retain on the graph also.

Site analysis

Once you have worked out the scale and know what is already on the site, you will have to work out what can be fitted in and what will have to go. Consider the following:

* With regard to existing trees and shrubs, work out which ones must be kept and those that can be removed for extra space.

* Think about the climatic conditions in your area such as wind, snow, rainfall etc. This will be of assistance regarding the placement of walls, fences and sheds as protection.

* Look at how you want the yard to be used. Do you want to include a play area for the children, or an entertainment area? Where do you want your gardens to be situated?

* Work out a rough estimate of your budget. What can you allocate as regards time and money for ongoing maintenance?

* Will you be including a structure such as a fountain or waterfall? Do you want a pool? Will these be future inclusions?

* Do you intend to use brick, flagstone or gravel etc for paths or driveways?

* How much lawn do you require? What will it be used for?

The answers to these questions will also be helpful in working out what plants and other landscaping materials you wish to include in the design as well as deciding upon a theme or style for the garden.

Drawing a bubble graph

This is a rough sketch that shows the position and layout of each element, which are shown by the use of bubbles, which gives the graph its name. You can create this graph by placing tracing paper over the scale graph, ensuring that there are allowances for plant growth included.

This “bubble” graph should include all the elements of the landscape design, from where the plants will be situated to the size and direction of paths, placement of outdoor structures, irrigation systems, inclusion of a small pond, and the list goes on. It is a good idea to take a walk through the yard, taking note of where the elements will be and sketching them in as you go.

Planning an irrigation system

You cannot consider a landscaping design complete without the addition of an irrigation system. You can choose either a sprinkler or drip irrigation system, but if you are considering installing the system yourself, do your homework. If you think that this is too difficult a task for you, consult an expert, making sure that you take a copy of the plans with you.

Setting Long-Term Goals and Getting There after College

by Landon McGehee

I had a relative graduate from college recently, and I’ve been thinking about the things young people should know before their parents cut them loose into the world.

Over the past few years, I’ve tried to teach my younger relatives the basics about being smart financial consumers. This includes living within their means, protecting financial information, and knowing that people aren’t necessarily rich even if they buy a lot of things or have many things.

Some of those lessons have stayed with them. One relative once called me to ask if it were OK to give his Social Security number to an employer. This relative isn’t afraid to ask for a supervisor or to try to negotiate a better deal. This relative also knows that something is probably a scam if it sounds too good to be true.

There are so many things, however, that people should know but they may not learn in school or from their relatives. Here are 10 tips for college graduates.

1. Know your credit score. You will have a credit report once you borrow money from a lender or have a creditor that reports to one of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). Student loans, home loans, and most credit cards report to the bureaus. You might have medical, utility, and other unpaid bills reported if they go to collections.

Your payment history and credit usage can generate a credit score. The most common score is the FICO score, which was developed by the Fair Issac Corp. Lenders and creditors use this score and your credit report to decide whether you can receive a loan and what your interest rate will be. Others - including your landlord and possible employers - also look at your score and report. Insurance companies may check your report and score before selling you a policy.

Check your credit report every once in a while to make sure that there aren’t any mistakes on it. You can get one free copy of your report once a year by visiting annualcreditreport.com. You will be asked if you want to buy your score after getting your report. You should take advantage of this offer.

The best way to increase your score is to always make your payments online and pay down any debt that you have. Go to www.myfico.com to read more about what your credit score means.

2. Use debt carefully. The most important rule to remember is to never borrow or spend more than you can repay. You should start out with one credit card. It may help you to use gasoline or department store credit card that you can only use in certain places. Use your debit card for convenience and save your credit card for emergencies only.

3. Live frugally. Don’t try to copy what your parents have, or even what some of your friends have. Don’t go out to Starbucks every day for coffee, and consider bringing your lunch to work instead of going out to restaurants. Try to get by without a car if you live in an area with good public transportation. If you rent a care when you need one instead of owning a car, you can save a lot of money on car payments, insurance premiums, gasoline, and repairs.

4. Repay your Debt. You must begin repaying your federal student loans (like your Stafford and Perkins loans) six months after you drop from half-time status at school. You should make sure that your lender knows your address so that you don’t miss bills or benefits (like interest rate reductions for making on-time payments).

Call your lender if you are having problems paying your debt. Federal student loans allow students to postpone payments if they are having economic hardship. If you default, however, you may lose the option to go into deferment or forbearance.

College loans are harder to have discharged than other types of unsecured debt. It almost will be impossible to get out of paying your college debt, even if you file for bankruptcy.

You should always pay off your most expensive debt first. Make the minimum payments on your federal loans, which are usually cheaper than your credit card debts, and use whatever is extra to pay off the credit card debt.

5. Start an emergency savings account. You should set up a monthly automatic transfer from your checking account to a savings or a money market account. This account is not designed to make you rich. It should only be used to pay for emergencies, like sudden major medical expenses or car repairs. You should try to have between three and six months worth of living expenses in your emergency savings account.

6. Take advantage of the match. Many companies let you contribute to a 401(k) plan (for regular corporations), a 403(b) plan (for schools and not-for-profit agencies, or a 457 plan (for government employees). All of the plans work in the same way.

In a traditional retirement plan, any money that you put in won’t be taxed until you take it out. If you take it out before you are 59 , you also will have to pay an additional 10 percent penalty.

Some employers may offer you a matching contribution which usually works in terms of your credit deposit ratio. This means that for every dollar you contribute, they may put in 50 cents. This goes up to a set limit, such as 6 percent of your total pay. You can take whatever you contributed (plus anything that money earned) when you leave the company. You must stay for a set period - usually three or five years - to keep the money that the company contributed.

If your company has a match program and you think you will stay through the vesting period, you should contribute as much as it takes to get that match from the company. Not taking the match is like walking past money on you find on the ground.

7. In order to live a financially stable life, you must think about your long-term goals and always do a regular calculation of your income ratio. If you’ve followed all of the above steps and still have extra money, put additional money toward your 401(k) or open an individual retirement account (IRA) at a bank, mutual fund, or brokerage service.

Compounding will help you accumulate money early. If you start in your 20s, compared to your 30s or 40s, you will have far more money than you would if you waited.

8. Don’t lend money to friends. You may lose your money and this can complicate your friendships.

9. Always be skeptical. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t believe anything that a salesperson tells you. Read the contract, and especially pay attention to the fine print.

10. Be careful about choosing your first job. Although money and benefits (like health insurance and retirement plans) are important, it’s also important that you are happy and satisfied with your job. Make sure that you have advancement opportunities.

Building an Herb Garden: Just the Basics

As a lawn care professional I get asked all the time about gardens.  One of the simplest and most basic things people can do is create a basic herb garden.  This not only can make your backyard looked spruced up but you also get the benefits of having fresh herbs.  An herb garden can take up very little space and still be practical.

There are a few things that you will need to get started for creating a basic herb garden. The first thing is to decide what type of basic herb garden you want. Do you want a container herb garden or are you looking for something a bit grander like a kitchen garden or a backyard herb garden.

Once you have decided the type of garden that you want to create you’ll need to decide if you want to create your garden from seeds or from already existing plants that you’ll transplant. Once you’ve determined the type of planting you want to do for your basic herb garden.

Supplies

There are a few supplies that you’re going to need for your herb garden. Of course, these supplies vary depending on which type of herb garden you’re creating. The list includes all the supplies necessary for both gardens. Some of the supplies are going to be the same so the list is combined for the purpose of being brief. The items you will need are: soil, fertilizer, seeds or herb plants, containers, and a spade.

Instructions

If you are using a container or containers to create your herb garden, prepare the container by placing the soil in it. Then depending on the type of fertilizer you’re using add the fertilizer to create the growing environment. You might or may not depending on the type of soil you get want to wet the soil down before planting. If you are, using seeds follow the planting instructions for the types of herbs you are planting. If you’re using already established plants follow replanting instructions. These are usually listed with the plant, but can be found on the web if necessary.

Growing Bulbs For Your Garden

The term “bulb” refers to the below the soil growth or “protuberance” of a group of plants. This growth is a storehouse for the plant. Some “bulbs” are in fact “corms” or “tubers”. A tuber is a thick piece of stem with a bud whereas a corm is a stem without a bud. Either way, these “bulbs” will eventually develop into fully grown plants.

There are a great many varieties of beautiful flowers that result from bulbs and they are used by many gardeners because they require little maintenance. They are also seen as a sign of spring - the pretty “snowdrop” being one of the first to appear after the cold of winter.

Planting Bulbs

Bulbs vary in size and the depth to which they should be planted is dependent on this. Generally, the larger the bulb, the deeper it should be planted, from between 3 to 6 inches into the soil. (For the benefit of the reader corms and tubers should be treated the same way.) The ideal way to plant a bulb is to use a spade to cut a hole into the soil, into which the bulb is positioned “pointy” end up and the soil replaced. For soils lacking in nutients, a small amount of bone meal should be added to the base of the hole and mixed into the soil.

It is a good idea to fertilize flowering bulbs each spring, preferably with manure, taking care to prevent the manure from touching the roots or the bulb. The manure should be worked into the soil. To increase the size of the flowers, cut off most of the buds. A regular watering is essential for these plants, even though they have their own “storehouse”.

Spring-flowering Bulbs

Of all the popular spring-flowering bulbs, the tulip has to be the leader. Tulips now come in a huge array of spectacular colours, from creamy white to almost black and in between, vibrant shades of reds, oranges, yellows and pinks along with pastel shades of violet and soft pink. However, you should not overlook the other spring-flowering bulbs such as the crocus, friesia, grape hyacinth and iris for their own beauty. The purple flowering bulbs and of course the tiny yet simply beautiful snowdrop are equally beautiful.

Summer-flowering Bulbs

These need the same treatment with planting and maintenance as the earlier flowering bulbs. Amongst the numerous varieties of summer flowering bulbs a few stand out as ideal for the home garden. These include the autumn crocus, which is a very good naturalizer and spreads over a few seasons to create a mass of strappy leaves and flower heads: the spectacular gladiolus with its “lion” like flower heads on a striking upright stem: bearded irises that form a stunning array if planted en masse: a number of the lilies including the huge callas and the pretty peonies which resemble roses in the structure of their flower heads; and the passiflora passion vine which creates a soft and luscious effect.

Proper Ways to Care for Landscape Trees

The components of a tree can be divided into three main parts: the root system, the leaves and the woody “skeleton” that connects them. The function of the root system is to provide the raw materials necessary for growth such as mineral salts, dissolved in water, to the tree. The leaves perform photosynthesis though the absorption of carbon dioxide from the surrounding air and using the energy from the sun, convert this into the simple sugars. These sugars are then combined with the moisture from the roots to give the tree its nutrients.

The trunk, limbs, branches and twigs act as the tree’s skeleton to hold the leaves in position so that they receive the life-giving sunlight and air. They are also used for transportation as they carry raw materials between the roots and leaves. Capillary attraction pulls up the materials absorbed through the roots and this is also assisted by the osmotic action induced by the evaporation of water from the leaves. This loss of water through the leaves is known as transpiration. On any summer day, a birch tree can transpire between 700 to 900 gallons of water. This is what causes the sap to continuously flow from the roots to the twigs at the very top of the tree.

A gardener’s most important consideration is to protect the tree’s root structure, especially when the tree is to be transplanted or preserved on a building site. The larger roots close to the stem are the tree’s “anchor” and the fine root hairs at the ends of the smaller roots are those responsible for water absorption.

The stem or trunk of a tree is made of three parts: the bark, the wood and the pith. The pith is the central part and is surrounded by the wood. Between the wood and bark is the cambium which is a thin layer that produces new wood and bark. Should the cambium ring be severed, for example, by a wire cable, the tree will die. As the cambium protects the tree against insects and disease, anything driven into it can severely damage the tree.

There are many things that can cause damage to a tree, including man. There are around 200,000 known species of insects that are known to attack and damage trees. As well as these, there are diseases such as blight, rust and rot, and natural occurrences such as storms, fires and droughts can also damage a tree. As some form of balance, birds help to control the spread of caterpillars, borers, harmful beetles and other insects that are likely to damage the tree.

Feeding Trees

In nature, trees grow and shed their leaves. These leaves decay, forming a good soil for the tree. These leaves also assist in preserving moisture in the soil. When a tree is grown on a lawn, it must compete with the grass for its nutrients and moisture. Leaves are raked up to prevent problems with the grass. As such, a successful gardener would be well advised to supplement the tree’s nutrients every two to three years.

This feeding should be done when the ground is easily “worked”, preferably in the spring or in the fall. A difficult but nonetheless worthwhile way of feeding is to strip the grass from an area all around the tree at least 2 to 3 feet beyond the outer branches, as the root system extends this far. Apply stable (horse) or barnyard (cow or chicken)manure to this area, ensuring that it is around 3 inches thick and then dig it in. After this is done, firm down the soil, rake it level and replace the grass.

One of the easy and simple backyard ideas is to drill holes over the same area, 12 to 18 inches deep. In order not to destroy any garden landscape ideas, these holes are spaced about 15 inches apart. Then fill each of these holes with a prepared fertilizer made from bone meal, tankage, peat moss or humus plus chemicals, in a formula equivalent to 10% nitrogen,6% phosphoric acid and 4% potash.

Water and Trees

During the hotter days of summer, lawn and specimen trees must be given a deep watering at least every 10 days to counteract the effects of transpiration and reduce stress on the tree. Light watering is inadequate, as the roots are very deep, so the hose or sprinkler should be left to run for at least an hour. Loosen soil that is compacted with a garden fork or similar and in the case of a large tree, holes of about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, 3 to 5 inches deep and 3 feet apart should be bored into the soil around the perimeter of the outer branches. The hose should be covered with sacking and left to run, or alternatively use a canvas hose. A good idea when planting a new tree is to place a piece of hose into the hole over draining tiles and this will ensure that water reaches the subsoil around the tree’s roots. The drain holes should be covered with stones to avoid evaporation.
